  • All 20 people aboard an old-time propeller plane were killed when the aircraft crashed into a mountainside in the Alps in southeast Switzerland

It crashed into Piz Segnas, a 3,000-metre (10,000-foot) peak in the east of the country on Saturday at an altitude of 2,540 metres on the mountain's western flank, Senti said.

The plane appeared to have hit the ground almost-vertically and at high speed, said Daniel Knecht of the Swiss transportation safety investigation board.

Police in central Switzerland said that a small plane has crashed in a forest, killing several people.

There were 11 men and nine women aboard, including an Austrian couple and their son, she said.

Police said Sunday they had determined that the 17 passengers and three crew members on board the plane all died.

There are now no details on casualties but the Ju-52 can carry up to 17 passengers, two passengers and a flght attendant.

The area, which includes a glacier, is popular with hikers.

The airline posteda statement online: "We have the sad duty to announce that one of our Ju-52 aircraft had an accident today".

The plane that crashed had its last maintenance check in late July, Waldmeier said, at which time no defects had been found. They also expect the investigation into the cause of the crash to be "relatively complex". Knecht said that while heat can affect an aircraft's performance, experienced pilots could deal with that.

The Junker JU52 HB-HOT aircraft was built in Germany in 1939 and is now a collectors' item.

The company's flight operations were suspended, it said.

"We can not yet explain what led to the tragic accident on Piz Segnas", he said.

The plane was operated by Ju-Air, a Swiss company that offers tours with vintage former Swiss military aircraft.
