Speaking at Manafort's trial late that afternoon, Gates bluntly answered the prosecutor's questions.
The charges largely predate his five months on the Trump campaign but were the first to go to trial arising from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Prosecutors also asked Gates about the specific businessmen in Ukraine who paid Manafort millions for his political consulting work.

But Gates, described by witnesses as Manafort's "right-hand man", is expected to provide the most damning testimony about Manafort's state of mind as well as his own role in the crimes. He said he did so at Manafort's direction.

The jury had heard testimony on Friday and Monday from accountant Cynthia Laporta, who described how Manafort and Gates doctored financial statements and backdated loans. A lawyer in Cyprus nicknamed "Dr. K", for whom Manafort did some political consulting work, helped them set up the accounts, Gates said.
Gates' testimony began on Monday and will likely continue into Tuesday, when Manafort's defense attorneys will cross-examine him. When Robert Mueller began investigating Russian interference a year ago, Manafort's questionable lobbying work - the sort of activity that has historically rarely been investigated in Washington - was put under a microscope, exposing him and his associates.
Laporta also discussed problems that arose in February 2016 when Manafort needed cash and applied to Citizens Bank for a real-estate loan against property he owned in NY.
The trial opened last week with a display of Manafort's opulent lifestyle, then progressed into testimony about what prosecutors say were years of financial deception. He said on Monday that, "at Mr. Manafort's request", he lied to Manafort's accountants about Manafort's control over certain foreign accounts.

Notably, after urging prosecutors to speed things along as jurors heard from 14 witnesses last week, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III said late on August 3 that Downing could begin his questioning of Laporta on Monday and wouldn't rush him. The effect of the loan was to reduce Manafort's income by that amount and reduce his taxes, she said.
Under cross-examination, she said at the time she believed Manafort was directing Gates' actions and "knew what was going on".
